Recreation and Grounds Committee

The April 11, 2011 meeting of the Recreation and Grounds Committee, held at South Riding Center was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by, Charlene Jones, Committee Chair.

Members Attending:  Charlene Jones, Donna Mines, Ken Walsh and Marge Morales.

Board Liaison:  Jeff Salmon

Staff Attending:   Dani Junkes, Elaine Stoner.

Guests Attending:  Paul Goudeau (DSMC), Pete & Sylvia Sovinski.

Guest via Phone in:  None

Members/Guests Absent:  Todd McFarland, Mark Henderson, Luis Pitarque and Steven Sebestyen.

Resident Comments:  Pete & Sylvia Sovinski inquired as to when developer turnover is to happen in the area of Magistrate Court.  They inquired since they would like to submit an Enhance-A-Spot Application on an Easement alongside their home.

Approval of the Minutes:  Donna Mines moved to approve the March 2011 Recreation & Grounds Committee Minutes as submitted.  The motion was seconded by Marge Morales.  The motion passed unanimously.

Reports: 

Charlene Jones

  • There will be a new Farmers Market coming to South Riding in June.  It will be located next to the tennis courts on Murrey Drive and Parish Street. 
  • Charlene will be working on a new pool article for the June South Riding Magazine.  If anyone has any input for it she would love to have it.
  • Would like staff to look into the “Dog waste problem area” temporary signage to be placed in the problem areas.

Jeff Salmon

  • Miller Dodson Associates has been accepted as our approved vendor for putting together South Riding Proprietary’s Reserve Study.
  • The Board of Directors approved the recommendation of the R&G Committee to approve the Tennis League Guidelines and Policies along with the Tennis League and Tennis Pro Court use times.
  • Dog Park zoning – The County is working to modify County Code 612.13 as to allow Dog Parks within Loudoun County.

Paul Godeau

  • Summer camp registration is complete and went smoothly.  All the camps are almost completely filled already.
  • Waiting on skate park improvements to be done.  The County will be pulling the fence back to where the tables currently are and paving it in.  The fence height is going to be increased.  There will be a temporary gravel entrance located at the end of the Community Center where the Senior Center is to accommodate more parking.

Elaine Stoner/Dani Junkes

  • New median Strip landscaping will begin at the end of this week.
  • New Meadows Pool landscaping has been completed.
  • Meadows Pool Lifeguard Station and Pool entrance has been newly painted and carpeted.  New ceiling fans have also been installed.
  • Town Hall Lifeguard Station has been painted and given a facelift.
  • Pergola to be installed at Meadows pool the first week of May.
  • All community common area trees have been mulched.
  • Clippers is now in the process of going through their first spring mowing in the community.
  • Clippers is also scheduled to mulch all tot lots and sand the volleyball court at Elk Lick Park next week.
  • Ponds are being stocked with fish.


Pending Business:

Update on Fishing Pier
Staff is working on getting an architectural designer to design an appropriate pier.

Meadows Pool Expansion
Landscaping has been installed.  A design overlay will be put down on the cement in the next few weeks.  The Pergola will be built over the new expanded area the first week of May.

Pool Shading
All the requested shading at the pools for 2011 has been ordered.

Dog Park at Elk Lick North
Dog Park zoning – The county is working to modify County Code 612.13 as to allow Dogs “off  leash” within Loudoun County.  SRP will work with County Supervisors to change the legal wording in the code so that it would be legal to have an enclosed off leash dog park.

Meeting adjourned: Ken Walsh moved to adjourn the meeting at 8:00p.m. The motion was seconded by Donna Mines.  The motion passed unanimously.
