South Riding Center Programs range from Art Classes to Cooking Classes and everything in between. Join in the fun!

Class sizes are limited. Classes without 10 registered participants will be cancelled. Registration will be processed on a first come  first served basis and will not be processed without payment.  Please return all completed forms to Town Hall. 

SRC Programs Cancellation Policy - Cancellations can be made up to 14 days prior to the event and a refund will be issued.  Cancellations within 14 days of the events will not receive a refund.

  

2013 Programs


June

11   Tuesday, 1:00pm,  Pirate Party AARGH!! - We will welcome all junior pirates in South Riding at the Fishing Pier on Crossfield Dr.  We will have a mini adventure complete with costumes, face painting and treasure hunting.  Wear pirate appropriate clothes and be imaginative and  we will complete the look.

12   Wednesday, 1:00pm  Father’s Day, Dad Rocks Paperweight - We will use smooth river rocks to create a custom paper weight for Dad, using markers and imagination.

14   Friday,  1:00pm,  Fish Print T shirts-  Please bring a white t-shirt in your size and we will paint a real fish and transfer the image to your shirt-fun and appeals to the kid gross factor!

18   Tuesday, 1:00pm  Decorate Cupcakes-  We will decorate mini cupcakes with decorating tips, and sprinkles for taking home.

20   Thursday, 1:00pm,   Nature Art Printing- This class uses fruits and vegetables to create an art piece.  We will carve and print using these materials.


July

1  Monday, 1:00pm,  Paint a T shirt-  We will use fabric paints to create a design on your t-shirt.  Please bring a white t-shirts and lots of imagination.

9 Tuesday, 1:00pm, Ice Cream- We will make ice cream and top it with our own creations—then eat it!

11  Thursday, 1:00pm,  Fishing-  We will meet at the Fishing Pier  on Crossfields Lane and try to catch a  big one. This is a catch and release program.  Bring your own fishing pole and we will provide the bait and bottled water.

15-19   Mon-Fri,  9-1pm, Art Camp  $150 (minimum 12)-  We will explore art projects in a variety of disciplines.  Each day will be devoted to hands on experiences.  Each child must bring their own lunch and wear paint friendly clothes.  We will have an art show at the end of the week showcasing the artwork.

26   Friday,  10:00am,  American Doll Accessory Class-  We will create an accessory for your own American Doll

30   Tuesday, 11:00am,  American Girl Doll Tea-  We will have an American Doll Picnic near the gazebo at South Riding Center.  Please bring your doll to enjoy a  picnic lunch on the lawn.

 

August

1   Thursday, 1:00pm,  Decorate a Cookie-  We will decorate giant cookies with frosting and sprinkles to take home.

6   Tuesday, 1:00pm,  Paint a Cake- (use brushes to paint frozen cake w food coloring) We will use brushes to paint a cake.  Now your children can eat their creative outlet.

8   Thursday, 1:00pm,  Soap Making- We will create glycerin soap with a variety of scents and colors.  If you like, bring something special to embed in the soap to make it truly yours.  The item must be small-ie small plastic figures, pebble, sea glass, articicial flower, rose petals-use your imagination.  (It may require picking up your completed project at Town Hall, as the time for setting of the soap is unpredictable).

13   Tuesday, 1:00pm,  Paper Making Class- We will create some hand made paper-class will be held outside as it is a wonderfully messy craft.  You may bring small flowers, ferns, colored papers, weeds, etc to embed in the paper.

15   Thursday, 1:00pm  Mini Spa-  This miniature version of mom’s spa day includes a pedicure and manicure, and we will also make some bath salts for taking home.

20   Tuesday, 1:00pm,  Fishing on the Pier-  Join us for a fishing session on the pier located on Crossfield Lane. Bring your own fishing pole and we will provide bait, assistance, and bottled water.  This is a catch and release, but we will have time for a photo if you are lucky!

September

3   Tuesday, 4:00pm,  Bookbinding-  This class instructs the children how to make a small booklet and then decorate the cover in any fashion.

10   Tuesday, 4:00pm  Make a Placemat-  The children will use canvas to make their own designs.  They can use handprints or other art, or make one for their dog.  The placemats are sealed when complete so they are washable.

12   Thursday, 4:00pm  Paint a Masterpiece- with acrylics We will use acrylic paints on canvas to create a custom painting.  Please wear paint friendly clothes

16  Monday, 4:00pm,  Thomas the Train- craft and movie  We will create a special Thomas the Train craft and then watch a Thomas the Train movie complete with popcorn

24  Tuesday, 4:00pm,  Decorate Cupcakes- We will use frosting and tips and sprinkles to make a gorgeous confection for taking home

28   Saturday, 10:00am,  Crepe Class -young teens  This class instructs how to make classic crepe batter and have a hands on try for both sweet and savory crepes.

 

October

8  Tuesday, 4:00pm  Mask Making-  We will learn how to make a mask just in time for Halloween.   Come to class with an idea of your choice.

10   Thursday, 4:00pm,  Shrinky Dink Jewelry- This class shows how you can use ordinary deli lids  and turn them into custom jewelry—fun and creative.

12 Saturday, 1:00pm Tie Dye T-shirts-  Bring a white t-shirt and wear paint friendly clothes.  We will use traditional tie dye techniques.

13   Sunday,  1:00pm,  Sewing Class- T-shirt pillow  Bring a favorite t-shirt which we will stuff and close turning it into a favorite pillow

22   Tuesday, 4:00pm,  Stone Painting-  We will place designs on river stones which can then be used as paperweights or accents.

27   Sunday,  10:00am,  Paint a Pumpkin-   We have the pumpkins and paint and your child provides the imagination.  Come and join our pumpkin painting fest—sign up early as this class fills
    quickly.


November

9   Saturday, 10:00am,  Decoupage Ornaments-  We will decoupage ornaments using fabric and  assorted printed art papers.

9   Saturday, 1:00pm,  Make your own ornaments-  This ornament class uses cinnamon to make a great fragrant ornament for your tree.  It is messy and fun.  Wear messy friendly clothes.

12   Tuesday, 4:00pm,   Make a button wreath-   This class makes a small ornament wreath using buttons.

14   Thursday, 4:00pm  Nature Painting -This class uses fruits and vegetables to create a painting –we will Carve, stamp and roll our “brushes” to create an interesting piece of art.

17   Sunday,  1:00pm,  Bath Salts - This class will show you how to create fragrant and softening bath salts in a  variety of colors and scents.  Take home your creation in a gift-worthy container.


December

7   Saturday, 1:00pm, Christmas Cookies - We will decorate your fantasy giant cookie.  We will have a variety of decorating tips, colored frosting and sprinkles available.

10   Tuesday, 4:00pm  Art/Marbled Paper - We will marbleize paper using a chalk technique-then use our paper for a finished project

14   Saturday, 10:00am  Gingerbread House - We will create a small gingerbread house from graham crackers. You will decorate and add windows and doors to your creation.

Private Classes:
We have had residents express an interest in having classes for personal groups.  Gather a minimum of 10 participants, pick a date, bring snacks and drinks, and we will teach/monitor the event.  The format will be the same as our regularly run classes, except the participants are all your friends.  Classes can be for either adults or children.  Here are some ideas, or come up with your own.  Wine glass painting, print your own t-shirts, watercolor art class, jewelry making, cupcake decorating, sushi class, cooking etc.  This would be great for ladies night out, team building event, girl or boy scout troops etc.  Contact Pam McKee at pmckee@southriding.net or Town Hall at 703-327-4390.  Cost: Starting at $10pp, minimum 10 people.  Must register and pay as a group, and be a South Riding Resident.
