Important Notice Regarding Your Recycling and Waste Service

Apr 01, 2020

Updated 4-6-2020: Regarding yard waste only.

Good news! Republic Services has agreed to comply with the county ordinance requiring the pickup of yard waste and will be picking up yard waste weekly. Loudoun County Zoning Enforcement  is committed to enforcing the requirements of the ordinance and will be following up on complaints that arise. Any change would require action of the Board of Supervisors through an amendment to the ordinance and that wouldn't be able to be pursued until much later this year.

The collection of yard waste is specifically required in the solid waste ordinance ( Unlike other counties, Loudoun's ordinance does not have an emergency provision that allows a reduction in service. The ability to do so in other places may have caused Republic Services to propose suspension of service in South Riding, but they have agreed to follow the requirements of the county ordinance. While there is a chance that they may reduce pick up of yard waste to every two weeks, they will not discontinue it altogether.

4/1/2020 Dear Valued Customer,

We are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation to make sure we’re doing the right thing for the health and safety of our employees, our customers, and the communities we serve. Our number one priority is safety, and that is at the forefront of every decision we make.

We provide an essential service to the country, and like the police and fire departments, it’s our duty to help protect and serve the public, especially in times like these. While we are working hard to ensure the highest quality customer service and minimal service disruption, the recent surge in residential waste and unique challenges we face requires us to temporarily modify our service offerings to keep your community clean and safe.

Beginning on Monday April 6th and until further notice we will be operating under the following guidelines:

• For customers with Republic Services/AAA trash cans, we will accept can contents only. Our crews will not pick up waste outside of the can. Most carts will hold 3 bags.

• For customers who do not have cans, we will accept waste placed in bags only. You are limited to 3 bags and they cannot exceed 50 pounds.

• Yard waste will now be picked up.

* Recycling is not affected by the changes. Boxes MUST be broken down and can be laid on the top of the recycling bin for pickup.

• Bulk waste is suspended immediately.

The Republic Services team remains committed to you throughout this crisis. We appreciate your business and wish you all the best during this difficult time.
