What happened to Celebrate South Riding?

May 25, 2016

South Riding Proprietary does not own any one piece of land large enough to accommodate an event of this size. For the past six years we have been fortunate enough to work with the Loudoun County Parks and Recreation Department to host our event mostly on their property. The beer garden as well as the fireworks shoot site happen to be on adjacent SRP property, as fireworks or alcohol are not permitted on County Property.

In 2013 when the expansion of the Dulles South Multipurpose Center was passed, SRP began working to find a temporary alternate location as well as negotiate with the County on an agreement for usage when the construction of the Center is complete. An agreement was reached allowing SRP to use the location in future years in exchange for an easement. Putting on an event of this size presents huge logistical and financial challenges. Other locations within South Riding were considered, vetted, and ultimately rejected for a variety of reasons due to budgetary and logistic constraints.

Celebrate South Riding was designed to build community within our members and locations outside our boundary does not attain that goal. A case could be made that the Board doesn’t have the authority to use homeowner fees for an event outside the community. The decision was made to put Celebrate South Riding on hiatus during the years of construction and instead offer residents many additional smaller events throughout the year in an effort to fill the void.
