We’ve never been so excited to see temperatures in the 30’s ever! We truly hope this “warm up” will help us in our continued clean-up efforts of snowcrete, icecrete, call it what you will, from Winter Storm Fern.

Why hasn’t SRP cleared the miles of sidewalks yet you ask? Streets are priority 1 and the team has been working at sidewalks and trails since last Wednesday. We too are impacted by the ability to ACCESS many of these areas. Mounds upon mounds of snow block the access points.

Yesterday our team made a lot of progress, but to say it’s extremely slow going is a massive understatement. They worked to open crosswalks at intersections so today we can get our equipment onto some of those sidewalk areas.

Why don’t we offer “clearing on demand”? We are sympathetic to everyone’s situation but there are operational standards and processes in place to ensure a responsible use of resources. Every concern is logged, investigated and will be prioritized appropriately.

Thank you South Riding for your continued patience.

Sidewalk Clearing Reminder
We know this recent storm was especially challenging due to accumulation, sleet and freezing temperatures, and we truly appreciate the efforts many residents have already made. We kindly remind residents that they are responsible for clearing sidewalks in front of and adjacent to their homes and should be making a reasonable attempt to do so at this time. For more information on sidewalk snow removal responsibilities, please see this helpful article.

Our Community Standards Team will begin noting homes where no portion of the sidewalk has been cleared for future follow-up. For now, this is simply a friendly reminder, and we thank you for helping keep our community safe and walkable.

Republic Services plans to attempt service tomorrow. Collection will only occur on streets their drivers determine are safe and passable at the time, and we will not know in advance which streets will be serviced. A makeup day has not yet been confirmed for any missed streets. We are following up and will share updates as they become available.

We are so ready for this snow to be gone! Since it’s going to be with us for a while, we encourage everyone to hang in there, support your neighbors, share those snow-shoveling back-ache remedies, and show patience and kindness as cleanup crews continue working long hours in tough conditions.

VDOT’s goal is to make all roads passable within 48 hours after a winter storm ends—by Tuesday night (1/27). “Passable” means an 8–10 foot plowed path that is drivable with extreme caution; roads may remain snow-packed and not cleared curb-to-curb or to bare pavement.

If your road has not been plowed or treated within this timeframe, please contact VDOT at 1-800-367-7623 or report the issue at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov/

Our South Riding team has been out for days and are doing the very best they can. They will continue to be out for days doing cleanups, clearing sidewalks, freeing up parking spaces and much more. They will perform as best as they can, but icy conditions will remain as long as temperatures remain well below freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

Thank You South Riding!

NO TRASH Tuesday

Note from Republic Services – Due to the ongoing winter storm, our operations will remain closed tomorrow. While we aim to resume residential service on Wednesday, we are actively developing a plan to address the routes missed on 1/26/26 and 1/27/26.

We will follow up with an update regarding recovery service as soon as possible. Thank you for your continued patience.

Cleanup Update
This was a multi-day winter storm, and temperatures remain below freezing. Cleanup takes time under these conditions.

VDOT’s goal is to make all roads passable within 48 hours after a winter storm ends. That’s Tuesday night (1/27) for those counting (we know we are). Their definition of passable is an 8-10′ plowed path, drivable with extreme caution, street is snow packed and not plowed curb-to-curb or bare pavement.

If you do not see that your road has been plowed or treated in the time frame of their 48 hour goal, call 1-800-367-7623 or visit https://my.vdot.virginia.gov to report a problem.

South Riding’s team continues to work and is performing admirably amidst equipment failures due to temperatures, slick conditions, and a large number of private vehicles blocking the streets.

Patience is appreciated and expected.

What we know so far:
It is going to snow this weekend.
Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the week.
This storm will impact the entire community and millions of others.

What we don’t know yet:
How much snow will accumulate.
When VDOT will get to the residential streets.
When the next trash/recycling pick up will be.

What can we do:
Be as flexible as possible.

Don’t put trash cans out until the storm has ended and a plow has visited your street.

Know VDOT’s priority of service

  • Priority 1: Interstates, limited-access highways, and primary routes (Routes 1-599). Locally = Route 50, 66, 495, etc.
  • Priority 2: Major secondary roads (Routes numbered 600 and higher) that connect to emergency services, public facilities, or have high traffic volumes. Locally = 606 (Loudoun County Parkway), 620 (Braddock Road)
  • Priority 3/After: Lower-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets, addressed once higher priorities are clear. Locally = South Riding neighborhood streets

Stay tuned on this website for updates. Links to snow clearing and trash collection information will be posted in the yellow bar at the top of the main page.

Thank You South Riding
South Riding crews will be out during the snow event and days after this event. We appreciate residents holding less emergent concerns until mid-week, we will address them as we are able and the freezing weather permits. As always Staff can be reached by email –  townhall@southriding.net

Below you will find our standard helpful resources about timelines, responsibility for clearing, maps and much more.

The expectation of a snow day can be exciting and thrilling, however, for the South Riding Proprietary staff, it means being prepared for snow covered roads, icy streets and sidewalks.

So who is responsible for what services? Answering these questions aids in preparation and expectations for all involved.

There are several responsible parties for snow and ice management within the South Riding community. The street responsibility list shows who is responsible for each street.

  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for VDOT maintained streets.
  • South Riding Proprietary (SRP) is responsible for privately owned lanes and alleys, and parking lots.
  • Residents are responsible for their driveways, including the apron and all sidewalks adjacent to their lot.
  • If you live in the apartments or in a condo association within South Riding, contact your management company for responsibilities and expectations.

Business and pleasure travelers please remember you are responsible to clear sidewalks even while you are away. Please be sure to make arrangements for sidewalk snow clearing during your absence. Contract with a local company or ask a neighbor for help. Negotiate the rate of compensation based on snow accumulation or time spent shoveling.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) –    VDOT’s goal is to make all roads passable within 48 hours after a winter storm ends. VDOT’s definition of passable is an 8-10′ plowed path, drivable with extreme caution, street is snow packed and not plowed curb-to-curb or bare pavement, and hills, curves and intersections sanded to help with traction. For information on tracking VDOT’s progress, please visit http://www.vdotplows.org/ This website allows residents to view VDOT’s mobilization plan for winter weather in detail and shows snow removal progress during and after a storm. The site displays each plow driver’s route, when they start plowing and when they have completed. If you do not see that your road has been plowed or treated in the time frame of their 48 hour goal, or if you have found damage to your property, call 1-800-367-7623 or visit https://my.vdot.virginia.gov/ to report a problem.

South Riding Proprietary (SRP)- Everyone on the SRP staff is involved in winter weather preparation.  From snow plowing, to logging snow concerns and continuously updating information on southriding.net and our social media.  The Operations team has dedicated staff for snow plowing on SRP owned streets.  Additionally, SRP contracts with a vendor to supplement. While every storm is different, SRP follows the procedures outlined below.
